Regaining Access to Your FetLife Profile
⚠️ Forgotten Password
Cause: You cannot recall your account password.
Solution: Visit the login page and click the 'Forgot Password?' link. Follow the instructions to receive a password reset link via your registered email. If you've lost email access, attempt to recover your email first, or contact FetLife support with proof of account ownership.
⚠️ Account Locked or Unable to Log In
Cause: Incorrect credentials entered multiple times, or browser/network interference.
Solution: Double-check your username and password for typos. If the issue persists, clear your browser's cache and cookies, or try a different browser. Sometimes, browser tracking protection settings or VPNs can interfere; temporarily disable them. If you suspect an account lock, wait a short period before trying again or use the password reset option. For persistent issues, contacting support is recommended.
⚠️ Phone Number Verification Not Working
Cause: FetLife may reject certain types of phone numbers (e.g., VoIP) or issues with SMS delivery.
Solution: Ensure the phone number you're using is a standard mobile number. If you're using a temporary or privacy-focused number service, confirm it's compatible with FetLife's verification system. If SMS codes aren't arriving, check your phone's signal or contact your service provider. As a privacy measure, many users opt for dedicated non-personal numbers for initial verification, though these are not ideal for ongoing two-factor authentication (2FA) or account recovery.
Upholding Your Digital Safety on FetLife
- 🔒 Anonymity in Usernames: Select a username that does not reveal your real identity to maintain privacy.
- 🔒 Strategic Profile Privacy: Carefully adjust your privacy settings to control who can view your profile, posts, and comments.
- 🔒 Discreet Information Sharing: Be extremely cautious about sharing identifiable personal information, such as real names, addresses, or workplace details.
- 🔒 Dedicated Email Addresses: Use a separate email address specifically for your FetLife account to compartmentalize your online identity.
- 🔒 Avoiding Identifying Photos: Refrain from uploading face photos or images that could easily lead back to your real identity or location.
- 🔒 Content Protection Policies: Be aware of FetLife's strict screenshot and 'spotting' policies, which prohibit sharing other members' content outside its intended context.
- 🔒 Prompt Reporting: Actively report any policy violations or abusive behavior directly through the platform's caretaking system rather than simply blocking or ignoring.
- 🔒 VPN for Network Privacy: Consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to mask your internet activity from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and enhance your network-level privacy.

Direct Answers for FetLife Members
Q: Is FetLife really private from search engines?
Yes, FetLife employs technical measures to prevent its public content and user profiles from being indexed by major search engines like Google. This means non-members cannot easily discover your profile through general web searches. However, this does not guarantee absolute privacy, as other forms of data leakage or intentional sharing can occur.
Q: Can someone find me on FetLife if they know my email or real name?
While FetLife allows searches by username, it generally does not enable searching by real name unless you have explicitly included it in your profile. Searching by email may return results depending on privacy settings. To maximize discretion, it is recommended to use a unique username and a separate email address not linked to your real identity. Avoid posting your real name or any highly identifying information.
Q: Why does FetLife require a phone number for account verification?
FetLife requires phone number verification primarily to deter spam, prevent automated account creation, and enhance overall platform security. It also enables features like two-factor authentication (2FA) and helps comply with anti-abuse regulations. This measure helps ensure a more authentic and safer community experience for all members.
Q: What's the difference between deactivating and deleting a FetLife account?
Deactivating your FetLife account temporarily hides your profile and content from other members, but retains all your data, allowing you to reactivate it later. Deleting your account, however, is a permanent action that removes your profile and all associated data from FetLife's servers after a specific period (typically 7 days), making it unrecoverable. Choose deactivation if you plan to return, and deletion for a complete exit.
Q: How can I manage who sees my profile and content on FetLife?
FetLife offers various privacy settings to control content visibility. You can specify whether your posts, pictures, and videos are visible to 'All Members' or only to your 'Friends'. It's highly advisable to regularly review and adjust these settings according to your comfort level. Engaging with your profile privacy dashboard helps ensure your interactions remain within your desired boundaries.
